Photography represents a unique visual platform. Independent of the more traditional arts. In photography the image is the product of a camera that records an existing reality. Photography in its most practiced role represents a Narrative depiction of an undisturbed time and place. Where the photographers intent is found in the operation of the camera and composition of the scene. While in the traditional arts such as painting, drawing and sculpture to reference a few. Where the artisan plays a direct role in the physical allocation of materials in the creation of a new reality.
To Often the photographed Narrative image is considered art based solely on the existence of an image. Not considering how the image is realized. When how the image is realized is taken into account a clear and distinct difference is evident between photographs inherit ability to record and the traditional arts ability to create.
However Photographs innate role as a Narrative representation does not mean that its recording ability can not be transitioned to portray a more artistic version of itself. But in order to accomplish this the photographer must make physical changes to the image, either prier to it being recorded or in post-production or a combination of both. These changes should go beyond any superficial changes that only have an affect on the appearance of the original image. This can be achieved with the introduction of content, that best express the photographers point of view.
Another distinct difference between photography and the traditional arts is its dependence on pre-existing elements that our photographed and used in the composition of the image. And while these elements alone may not be exclusive to the photographer how they are utilized in the composition of the scene may be considered exclusive to the photographer.
Even with all these changes that subvert the Narrative definition of photography the fact remains that if the resulting image is a product of a recording the image itself remains under the domain of photography.
Photographs relevance as a visual medium is undeniable, and its importance is not conditional on it being considered art. Photographs importance is dependent on its own abilities.
